What are the signs you need new brakes? We understand that maintaining you car can be both rewarding and puzzling. One crucial part of your vehicle that demands attention is your brake system. So we are here to guide you through 5 signs that your brakes need extra attention. To help ensure your safety and peace of mind on the road!
1. Squeaky Symphonies:
Have you ever noticed a high-pitched squeal when you apply your brakes? This can be a clear sign that your brake pads are getting worn down. Most brake pads have built-in wear indicators that will emit a sound when the pads are worn down. This sound is to ensure you never miss the memo! To let you know it's time to replace your brakes, before it becomes dangerous to drive.
2. Vibrations and Shakes:
Does your car shake or vibrate when you brake? Warped brake rotors could be the culprit. This not only affects your vehicle's performance. It also poses a safety risk! There are other things that can cause your vehicle to vibrate or shake. If this is something you are experiencing, it will help to get your brakes checked. This will not only provide you with peace of mind. If your brakes are the source, repairing them will restore that smooth ride you love!
3. Thin Brake Pads:
Each brake pad has friction material attached to it. This material is important! You need this friction to apply pressure and stop your vehicle. The thickness of the brake pad material wears down over time. When that happens you will need to replace the brake pads. Take a look through your wheel spokes. Can you visibly see the thickness of your brake pads? If they look thin, it's high time to replace them. For best performance your brake pads should be thicker than 6.4 mm (1.4 inch). If they seem to be thinner than this it's time to get them checked out.
4. Mysterious Fluid Puddles:
We all like mysteries; especially around Halloween! But no one likes mysteries when it comes to their vehicle. (Unless they are a mechanic who enjoys puzzles and problem solving!) Have you noticed any unusual puddles under your car? Your vehicle has many fluids that could be leaking. If you see a clear or brownish fluid under the car, it could be brake fluid. Brake fluid leaks can compromise your braking system. It's important to let your Service Advisor know about any potential fluid leaks. Make sure to give them info like: how often, what part of the vehicle (front, back), and what color.
5. Screeching Stops:
Have your brakes turned into a live concern? Do they screech every time you stop? A loud screeching sound can indicate metal-to-metal contact. Remember that friction material we talked about earlier? The screeching sound can mean that material is gone! At this point prompt attention is essential to prevent damage to your rotors. And to keep you and your family safe while you're out there driving on the road!
