5 Tips For Safe Driving In Winter Weather
We already have our first round of snow this season! So we want to share a few tips to improve your safety out on the road. We have included a vehicle safety checklist and a list of items to keep in your vehicle. The best thing for winter driving is to be prepared and stay calm. And if possible, stay home and enjoy the beautiful snow!
1. Check the weather conditions in advance
Just looking outside may not be enough! Check winter weather advisory reports for snow, sleet or ice. This will help you plan ahead. You may need to leave early, or plan ahead for your drive back home. Dress appropriately with layers, hats, gloves, and sturdy shoes. Plan your drive based on roads that may have the safest conditions!
2. Safety checklist before you hit the road
When you are driving in winter weather, it's important to check your vehicle for increased safety. Here's a quick checklist of things you should check before you drive in winter.
3. Keep an emergency kit in your vehicle
There are some things you should always keep with you when driving. If you don't have an emergency kit, now is the perfect time to make one! Here are a few items you should keep in your vehicle, especially during the winter months.
4. Drive slowly and carefully, watch for black ice!
Black ice is one of the biggest dangers, as it's hard to see and can cause your vehicle to slide out of control. If you have to travel this winter, make sure to drive slowly and cautiously. If you do hit black ice, stay calm and resist the urge to brake suddenly. Gently let off the accelerator and steer into the skid until you regain control.
5. Use caution when braking and turning
Winter weather can be very unpredictable. You will want to use extra caution when braking and turning, to avoid skidding on the ice or snow. Winter tires can provide extra traction. When driving, be sure to leave plenty of stopping distance between you and the vehicles around you. This will give you extra time so that you can brake more slowly. You will want lots of extra room when there's added fog and snow blocking your vision. Take your time and don't allow yourself to be rushed by others around you.
